What we are witnessing here is part of the Swahili Diaspora - the migration of the Swahilis because of economic factors. Having lost the economic basis of their maritime civilization, the handover of political authority to a primarily non-Muslim - often rabidly anti-Muslim - government was probably the last straw on the camel's back.
The Muslim world - particularly the Arab world - provided economic opportunity but political insecurity. The Western world provided political security but limited economic opportunity. Some have chosen one - the Arab world - and some have chosen the other - the Western world, in particular the United Kingdom.
Some - very few - have chosen both. One leg in each camp, so to speak. They spend part of the time here and part of the time there. We do not have time today to look at the two coincident diasporas. It should be a fascinating story.
But just now I would like to spell out the prognosis for the future and the actions you need to take to make the adaptations necessary for success in this Western world that has given refuge - albeit that refuge appears sometimes to have been given somewhat grudgingly. Which brings us to the next area we need to explore: ADAPTING TO THE WEST.
